I had my first meeting with Monika and this is what came out of it;
Nothing is completely new, sometimes something old finds new ways to flow, finds new movements.
Take away the pressure of making something new, it is dangerous to force. Work is what it is, not old or new, it is being work now.
Don’t think about the end, It never ends.
If you set yourself a forced topic, you will have a forced outcome. Just observe the flow of your work.
If the work is very happy that’s not its fault.
You make Chains- she said. I had never considered what I do to be chains. I always considered them to be Links. I am being that shortsighted, I had never considered the whole chain, only each separate link. (said with my eyes wide wide open, Im gagged…wtf)
Chains have so many readings, so much historical context, and I have not once attempted to dance with them. Not once.
I need to let the work meet the issue, let the message embody the work. Let the idea come through, like a revelation.
Meaning stays, beauty goes away – she said.
Keep a polite distance, you have the right not to go in too deep. Make an interface; a space for the viewer to go as far as they choose.
Think of levels in the work, not everyone will want to go deep into the work, but some will go in very deep. We load the work so much. To an unconscious level, at times misunderstood, unknown. Thats when the work becomes interesting.
Look back, try not to be literal. Sometimes work is just for fun. The logic is in the thinking not in the results.
Show me the work.
