Proof of Concept

HS8 group exhibition at DEPOT ArtSpace, Auckland 4 November – 20 December, opening Saturday 4 Nov, 2 pm

‘Proof of Concept’ is an exhibition that marks the halfway point in the journey of HANDSHAKE 8’s two-year professional development programme.
The Handshake programme sets the stage for exploration without parameters.

The work showcases a diverse group, united by material play and conceptual insight.
The pieces presented as ‘proof of concept’ explore ideas, processes, and materials.
HS8 artists are engaged in processes of testing, evaluating, and experimenting with various explorations to uncover potential future options and conceptual insights.

Peter Deckers Maker, Curator, Editor, Educator, Founder of the HandShake Project MTS (Vakschool Schoonhoven), MFA (Hons) (Elam), DipTeach Peter studied art and jewellery making in both the Netherlands and New Zealand. He is active in his own art practice, making collections for national and international exhibitions, as well as in the wider jewellery art community instigating opportunities. His philosophy in arts education is that each individual (student) is unique, therefore has the potential for artistic expression. His passion for jewellery and the arts transfigures lessons into experiences. Peter is both a contemporary artist and a craftsperson. Ideas that make distinctive connections with jewellery are the inspiration for his practice, which is highlighted through a series of engaging artworks. He exhibits with galleries throughout New Zealand and the world. His work, philosophy and ideas have been discussed in several publications. Next to being a tutor and maker, Peter has been an instigator as jewellery curator, writer, and artistic director of the HANDSHAKE PROJECT, a 2-year exhibition and mentor project for emerging jewellery artists, funded by Creative New Zealand.
