H8 mentees & mentors:

The mentorship programme has been the flagship of the HANDSHAKE project. The HS mentorship system with top international mentor artists has supported many NZ emerging artists and provided professional ‘tools’ through their generous feedback support. This guidance is crucial for accelerated learning as it exposes mentees to years of experience, knowledge, and resolution processes that are not typically provided by the traditional art education system in New Zealand.   Even ex-HS mentees are now being asked to become mentors for the new generation. Each HS8 artist has their selected mentor, and they start working with them in 2024.

The HS8 mentor programme aims to assist, encourage, challenge, and provide constructive criticism toward the mentee’s personal and artistic growth.

HS8 artists/mentees will create a body of work with their mentor that will be showcased at Pah Homestead, Auckland (end 2024). The mentor sessions are scheduled throughout 2024 to support the various stages of their development leading up to their final exhibition.

Larger than my head

Larger than my head

As our online classes with Estela Saez have come to a close I took a moment to reflect.  I hadn’t known what to expect from the masterclasses. The first class was also the first meeting as a handshake group and I was nervous/excited to meet my peers.   Our...

Light from Tate

Light from Tate

Recently I went to the Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tamaki to see their exhibition 'Light from Tate: 1700s to Now'. The exhibition artworks explored how light captivated artists, but also how it was used in their artwork. Both literally as well as symbolically.  The...

Loud Chatter

Life can seem like a juggling act and I often feel the same about creativity. Applying to be a part of Handshake 8 I needed to consider multiple factors which often felt contradictory. Apart from the concerns about having time and money to immerse myself in the...

Reflections

Reflections

The virtual classes with Estela Saez have now sadly come to an end. I learnt so much from Estela, as well as from the Handshake 8 cohort. It was a period of intensive development of my making processes, as well as expansion of my thinking and creative comfort zones....
