HANDSHAKE 5 consists of 12 artists from the previous HANDSHAKE Projects selected by the CODA team (NL).
This one-year specialist programme focuses primarily on DIALOGUES and RESPONSES.
The first of the two exhibition tasks is to go in dialogue with selected artworks from the CODA museum (NL) jewellery collection (Apeldoorn, the Netherlands). Exhibition essay text, read here.
The second task is to respond to the selected spaces at the TE URU museum (Auckland, New Zealand).
Both projects inspire different approaches and require experimentation and artistic focus. Each artist is supported throughout the year by a coaching team, including Roseanne Bartley (online coach and masterclass tutor), Sian van Dyk (studio visit coach), and Vernon Bowden with James Anderson (technical support team coach). At the end of each month, the HANDSHAKERS provide a blog post on their progress. See below for how that process developed over time.

Strangling space
When a collection of works is in response to a gallery space the volume and shape of the space can (potentially) over-ride/rule the works, if we let it. What if we "strangled the space" and bent it to our will rather than being beholden to it? The space becomes no...
“Zig-Zag”
My personality is one that thrives on order. While not a precise person by nature I do like things to be "tidy". There's something about a zig-zag that fits perfectly with my desire for order and my inability to subscribe to strict precision. Terhi Tolvanen has...
Unicum
I love words and I love discovering words that describe concepts concisely and precisely. When I saw the word "Unicum" on the sheet next to the Jantje Fleischhut work I'll be responding to from the CODA Museum collection I was excited. UNICUM: "A unique example or...
New Beginnings
A new year and a new handshake project to go with it 🙂 I really pleased to have been selected to participate in Handshake5. The project is only one year long this time but I'm sure that won't make the experience any less intensive The works from the CODA collection I...
The Art of Finding
When I was faced with the pleasure to choose 3 artists out of the amazing collection of the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn it brought up many questions? Why are those particular artists and their work bring something to life and inspire? What makes an artwork speak to you?...
Te Uru
Within my practice a particular word stands out for me at this moment. Bling referring to the sound effect of tinkling bells sound of light hitting something shiny especially valuables to sound like a diamond ring acknowledge its use for tv cartoon - to hip...

My intent with these 3 artists is to question my own practice with a few of each artists highlights. Lucy - the ritual of her objects giving greater strength. Paul - his rugged strong and questioning approach to making. Ruddt - expressing his experiences on journeys...
So juicy!
I’m feeling beyond lucky to be starting my third Handshake experience. HS1 (Prentice and Prodigy) emboldened me to develop work that honours my real-life preoccupations. HS3 (Concept and Conception) had me bouncing around the far fringes of expanded jewellery...
Initiating Actions/Te Uru
How can things indicate to a human what they what them to do or initiate specific actions? I’m interested in the ideology of objects being used as ‘Actants’; how they can be put in a certain place or paired with other things to make a person act in a particular way....
Space
Looking at Te Uru – the architectural space and the brief to respond to that in some way. A starting point has been to look at a couple of different artists – Mel Bochner a conceptual artist who from the 1960’s developed a number of formats for making work one of...
Starting point – Lam de Wolf
February 20th, 2019 Draping venetian blind Of course, Lam de Wolf is the first starting point – looking at the broader scope of her work and noting that much of it is closer to contemporary textile art was a definite factor in her appeal, that and the fact that...
Thinking through Making/CODA
The artists I have been paired with, Lucy Sarneel, Reka Fekete, and Attai Chen, all resonate with the idea of Thinking through Making. Similarly, I allow my own work to manifest itself as it develops. I see the theme Rough and Raw as a metaphor for Thinking through...
Much ADO about…
I am paired with the ADO collection and contemporary jeweller Lucy Sarneel. The ADO collection is an historical collection of wooden toys designed by Ko Verzuu from mid-1920 to early 1960s. The toys have clean lines and are brightly coloured, inspired by the De Stijl...

Conversation starter
In Onno Boekhoudts work, there is a freedom and sense of immediacy, a glimpse into the process of a maker. His work seamlessly bridges and defies definition between jewellery, object and material, drawing the viewer in for further consideration. The pieces selected...
Springboard
I've been carefully reviewing the works that I have been given to respond to; making notes, playing with materials and researching the artists work. I’ve received three artists' works: one from Evert Nijland, Tehri Tolvanen, and Jantje Fleishut. These artists all use...

Pareidolia
Some people see the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast. I see a face in a piece of saddle leather.
