To kick off HandShake7 we embarked on a series of fast paced masterclasses conducted online by jeweller and educator Estela Saez. Coming straight in from HandShake6 and Estela’s online exhibition masterclasses, I was prepped for the fast paced energy of the sessions, the challenging workload and quick turnaround between sessions. After a couple of sessions together we split into two groups and individually conducted material investigations with a series of tasks, each leading on from the last.

From February to June we met 8 times, first working in paper and then a variety of materials we each collected. Challenged by Estela to push one material further, we went further. Taking it back into more familiar realms we used metal to make a quick series of rings, connected by form and essence to previous discoveries. 

The intense five month period kept us on task and making fast, with new opportunities to explore further that will resonate for far longer. Feedback from both fellow HS7’ers and Estela provided constructive insights and a range of perspectives, of such value when the work is so fresh and close.

For these next few months each of us has a plan in place progressing towards resolved jewellery works for an exhibition at Galerie Marzee, Netherlands from 1/11/22…
