Weirdly, going back to the material that started this whole crazy mid-life career change, was kinda challenging. My little world had been so consumed with plastic’s and soft materials that I was a bit anxious getting back on the tools.
To combat this, I spent a bit more time planning than I normally would. The majority of the first week I was doodling, internet mooching and trying out ideas with paper and cardboard. After that I cleared a few cobwebs from the CAD/ Rhino part of my brain to make a basic template for a 2D to 3D square ring.

I also took the opportunity to add another layer of learning by challenging myself to think about the fit and function of large scale rings. It frustrates me when top-heavy contemporary rings flop around on the finger. Big drama adornment is awesome but it should be comfortable as well….and thats not always been the case with previous projects.
When I finally got to the bench I was excited to see where the first ring would take me and it didn’t disappoint. These initial versions all need a tweak or three but I do love the forms….and of course, once I actually started working with silver/metal again, I remembered how happy it makes me – despite the arctic temperatures in my garage/workshop.
