We recently undertook our first class with the incredible Estela Saez, who is guiding us in the development and honing of our design thinking and making processes. In this first virtual class Estela got us straight into action! We underwent some making exercises under a tight time limit (between 10-15 minutes).

The way I traditionally make objects, especially for exhibitions, takes time. It can take days, if not weeks, depending how complex the pieces are. During that time there is a slow yet steady process of designing, making and inevitably problem solving. It was such a wonderful shock to the making system to think, make and problem solve in such a short space of time. I have always found a time limit like this makes the overthinking part of my brain get out of the way. You don’t have time to over analyse, if you have an idea you go for it. There is no time to waste you have to just get to making and figure things out along the way.

Object one: the red funnel.

In the 15 minutes I cut the funnel into slices. After some glueing issues, I was able to get them to hold.

Object two: white bucket

The brief for this object was to create something that represented ourselves. In the 10 minutes I created an enormous wearable link chain. I cut the bucket into slices, to create the links.

Construction detail of the link chain. I cut a few of the links to construct the chain. I used rope to rejoin the links once the chain was constructed.

Object three: the black bucket

The brief for this object was “a portrait of someone you hate”. I created a mask that has not eyes to see and no ears to listen to others, and one very big mouth with tongue and all.
