I’ve loved all the little exercises we’ve been given to prompt ideas.
For example:
- Drawing with our eyes closed.
- Drawing or Making with a word in mind
They’re great to stop being overwhelmed when presented with a new project. I often think big, wild and whacky, which at times can be stalling because I then have to strip them back to what is achievable with my current skill set, usually through a series of making projects. So, having time limitations of one or two weeks as well as material constraints and abstract start points have been good for me .
This was a playful project based off a drawing while exploring new materials.
I have a slight obsession with packaging – these foam sheets are just another material I couldn’t bring myself to throw into landfill. Its soft and squidgy and springy and sculptural….yet has an element of ‘ick’ when on the skin…. A little like plastic rain ponchos on a hot day.
These images show the process, from picture to material-play, figuring out the form and finally, the worn work. I enjoyed the scale and the sculptural nature of the resulting piece. It was a fun one to make….even if it doesn’t appear to be from the look on my face:-)
