“On our walk we encounter a few peculiar, rather incongruous objects, sometimes very much alone while others are in groups and radiate vigour and strength without ever being obtrusive. These are small things that speak to you and although you do not always know their language, you still think you understand it. Or are you hearing yourself when you communicate with them?” (from ‘A Walk’ by Cornelie Holzach in Ute Uitzenhöfer Schmuck P.16)

Daily walks have become an integral part of my practice. I take my time observing, noticing, collecting; seeking out things that would perhaps otherwise go unnoticed. This slowed down pace is not how I normally operate, but, as it is for so many of us, life is slower at the moment. There is time to give to these objects and they too seem to give back. Fragments of the things I have gathered emerge in the work I make. Am I hearing myself when I communicate with them? Or do the objects also get their say? My feeling is that this is a collaboration. The object is speaking their language and as a maker I am trying to translate it. Maybe I’m not fluent but I’m hoping to get the gist.
