Artist statement

The objects we surround ourselves with are not inanimate objects but alive. The processes used to construct objects are part of the narrative associated with them and yet not the end of the story. As an artist, I am interested in exploring the persistence of objects and examining alternative narratives for the roles they play in our lives.

Bio

Fiona Frew uses her artistic practice to examine the role of objects persistence. Frew works in a process orientated manner in order to explore cultural and social associations with objects used in daily life. Through de-constructing objects, Frew re-constructs them into wearable objects, that when worn on the boy encourage the wearer and audience to consider possible alternative futures.

Rules Required?

As part of the Handshake 8 journey, we have jewellery history lectures from the wonderful Andrea Daly, New Zealand Jeweller and educationalist. As part of a homework task, Daly required us to think about the unwritten rules of contemporary jewellery, consider our own...

my flexible quasi-process

A few years ago I felt the necessity and had the privilege of time to study and to develop a framework for my practice. With many thanks, especially to Johanna Zellmer, my MFA supervisor, the Dunedin Art School community and my family, clarity around my practice...

Loud Chatter

Life can seem like a juggling act and I often feel the same about creativity. Applying to be a part of Handshake 8 I needed to consider multiple factors which often felt contradictory. Apart from the concerns about having time and money to immerse myself in the...
